After years of hand-coding html updates for our clients we're now producing most of our Websites within content management systems. Content management software is somewhat like an operating system for Websites with all the tools necessary to build and maintain the content of a site from within a common browser window.

We've studied and evaluated many different Content Management Systems over the last couple of years. These are the products that we've found to be the most reliable and easy to operate.

phpWebSite

phpWebSite is a stable, mature and well-supported open source content management system that we've done a fair bit of work in. Right out of the box it offers many of the features that you would like to have for a website, like user authentication, online editing of webpages, elementary workflow for publishing, built in search functionality, etc. Additionally, it serves as a platform for applications, like event calendars, forums, photo gallaries, and webforms.

Plone

Plone is an open-source content management system built on top of the Python application server Zope and its accompanying Zope Content Management Framework. Plone is free software and is designed to be extensible. It can be used as an intranet or extranet server, document publishing system, and groupware tool for collaboration between separately located entities.

WordPress

WordPress is a powerful personal publishing software with a focus on ease of use, speed and a great user experience. WordPress has become particularly popular as a blogging tool.
